For the first time in history, we – the people of Planet Earth – have the means to turn this situation around sooner, rather than later, and eliminate poverty. 2005 was the beginning of the battle to make poverty history. It was the year when governments around the world were forced to take notice and take action. What was the catalyst? Ordinary people!
“The building blocks of GCAP processes are the national alliances and campaigns. In Maputo, GCAP was just an idea, in Bangkok it was an action, in Beirut it is a mobilized force. As we leave Beirut we need to realize that GCAP achieved a lot; more than anyone can achieve in 15 months, and it is the first time that national coalitions own the process.”
– John Samuel, ActionAid International
“Our previous advocacy initiatives demonstrated that only by joining our efforts together we can make a difference. Government and other decision makers took us seriously only when we express our voices together. If we do not come together and express our message it will never happen.”
– The Azeri National Coalition
“GCAP is you and me, a citizens’ movement that allows you to act with other people who feel the same about global poverty, injustice and inequality. … Poverty is the denial of basic rights, power and entitlements to assets, livelihoods, services and a voice in society.”
– Idaishe Chengu – MWENGO
“Politicians and campaigners have failed the poor – again – by tackling the symptoms and not the causes of global injustice.”
– Noreena Hertz, journalist
