For the first time in history, we, the citizens of the world, have the means to eliminate poverty around the globe. 2005 was the year when we, the people, raised awareness and forced our many governments to take action. Taking this opportunity, numerous NGOs, international networks, trade unions, religious groups and other civil society sectors met in Johannesburg, South Africa and agreed to launch a Global Call to action Against Poverty.
GCAP is the largest anti-poverty movement the world has ever seen, bringing together trades unions, charity organizations, women’s groups, faith organizations youth groups and others. GCAP is an alliance, not a membership organisation.
2005 was the year when ordinary and extraordinary people around the world had a unique opportunity to make a big difference. This campaign did not ask for money but for the public voice. By signing up to the campaign the public called upon world leaders to enforce the promises they have already made in front of cameras. Through their support, poverty alleviation can become a reality.
